How to Apply

Guide to Application Status/Terms

Center for Field Sciences archaeology field school excavations

There are five steps of student admission to CFS program:

Applicant: A student who began an application to a CFS field school.

Submitted: A student who submitted a complete application to CFS and waits for field school director(s) review. Once an application is submitted, an email is sent to the student.

Admitted: A student whose application was approved by program director(s).  This does not guarantee a space in the program – only a deposit payment does (see below). Once an application is approved, an email is sent to the student.

Accepted: A student who was admitted to a program and paid the $300 nonrefundable deposit fee. An Accepted student has a guaranteed space in the program. Once the deposit is processed, an email with next steps is sent to the student (sign legal document, add emergency contacts, etc).

Enrolled: A student who paid the full tuition for a program. Once final tuition payment is processed, an email is sent to the student.

before you apply

Make sure you are eligible. Review our Eligibility criteria.

Check with your home institution whether the Center for Field Sciences credits can be transferred in, what financial aid may be available to you and how will the credits count towards your major. A good place to start is with your advisor or your Study Away department.

If you are unsure what program best fit your needs, contact CFS staff members. We are here to help. Go to our Contact Us page.

If you plan to attend a program outside your home country, make sure to apply for a passport. Already have a passport? Make sure it is valid for at least 90 days past the program’s beginning date. Many required that minimum for entry to their country.

Apply to a CFS program

Choose the program that best fit your needs. Click on the “Apply Now” button.

Create an account. An ID and password will be provided, and your age checked. You must be 18 years or older to attend any of our programs.

Applications are free. You are not required to pay regardless of the number of applications you submit.

Review all needed application materials. You can save your application as you go complete portions in multiple sessions.

Once all materials are provided, click “submit”. Your application will be sent for a review by the program director(s).

Get Accepted to a program

The program director will review your application and send an email of your status. If admitted, you can proceed to Phase II of the application process.

To be Accepted to the program – that is, to have a guaranteed space in the program – you must pay the $300 nonrefundable deposit fee. Seats will be assigned on a first come-first served basis.

Complete all other forms. These include Emergency Contact information and signing the Student Handbook and Participant Agreement. If you attend a domestic program, upload Proof of Health Insurance.

Attend the online orientation for your program. Dates are published on the program website page.

Finally, pay the balance of your tuition. You are now good to go!
