2024 Field Schools Are Coming By Nov 10

The CFS Board of Directors is evaluating all returning and new field schools for 2024. We will post programs and begin enrollment by Nov 10 of this year. Come buck to our site by then and explore dozens of new and returning programs.

SAMPLE OF LIKELY 2024 PROGRAMS

Austria-Aguntum

Directed by Dr. Martin Auer (Senior Scientist & Aguntum Site Director, University of Innsbruck), this program explores a regional Roman era center amidst the Alpine landscape of the Austrian Tyrol mountains

Canada-Heads-Smashed-In

Directed by Drs. Shawn Bubel & Kevin McGeough (University of Lethbridge), this program explores a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where First Americans used the natural topography to drive herds of bison off cliff edges and then process the animals in the vicinity

Italy-Pompeii

Directed by Dr. Llorenç Alapont Martin (Prof. of Physical and Forensic Anthropology, Univedsidad Europea Valencia), this program explores a very large Roman cemetery present just opposite the Porta Sarno, the oldest city gate at Pompeii

Spain-Cova Gran

Directed by Drs. Dr. Jorge Martínez-Moreno & Dr. Rafael Mora Torcal (Universitat Autonoma Barcelona), this program explores the beginning of our species existence, with the emergence of modern humans as seen from Southern Europe

UK-Cerne Abbey

Directed by Dr. Hugh Willmott (Senior Lecturer, European Historical Archaeology, University of Sheffield), this program explores the transition of a major monastery into private holding as a result of Henry VIII dissolution of monasteries in 1539 CE England

US (PA)-Underwater CRM Archgaeology 

Directed by Dr. Ben Ford and colleagues (Professor of Anthropology, Indiana University of Pennsylvania), this program teaches skills of underwater CRM archaeology, with emphasis on understanding underwater landscapes, through the exploration of submerged landscapes of Lake Erie

Spain-Civil War Battle for Teruel

Directed by Dr. Llorenç Alapont Martin (Prof. of Physical and Forensic Anthropology, Univedsidad Europea Valencia) and colleagues, this bioarchaeology program is focusing on human remains exhumation of soldiers killed during this bloodiest battle of the Spanish Civil War. The winter of 1937 was one of the coldest in history, and Franco ordered the burial of all soldiers together, both Republicans & Nationalists. These include members of the International Brigade, and thus far remains of at least three American volunteers have been recovered.

Israel-Hippos

Directed by Drs. Arleta Kowalewska  & Michael Eisenberg (University of Haifa, Israel), this program explores the ancient Graeco-Roman city of Hippos of the Decapolis. Research is focused on various time  periods, from Hippo’s foundation in the Hellenistic period (mid-2nd century BCE), through its Roman-period time of prosperity (64 BCE – mid-4th century CE), to the Christian transformation in the Byzantine period (mid-4th to mid-7th century CE) and other changes that happened after the Islamic takeover (mid-7th century CE to 749 CE earthquake).Â
